Not recognizing surround speakers

Audyssey is not recognizing my two rear speakers during setup.I have polk audio towers in front, polk sub (which its not recognizing either, but i read up on that.)and polk 85i in-wall speakers in back. I am using an Onkyo tx-nr807 amplifier. I've set the speakers up as " surround left and right", and as "surround back left and right",and get no sound out of rear speakers during set up. Front and centre test fine. I am not bi-amping my fronr as yet. Help!

Make sure the surround speakers are connected to the Left and Right Surround terminals on the back of the amp and not the Back Surround terminals. In a 5.1 system the Back Surround terminals are not to be used.

The second most common reason that speakers are not recognized (assuming they are connected correctly) is that there is not enough high frequency content reaching the mic.  This could be because of the way the speaker is pointing, but it could also be because the tweeters are not working.

Chris... does this mean I need to connect my rear speakers to the surround and not the back-surround terminals? I am using onkyo 607SR

Yes!  Back Surround is only to be used in a 7.1 system.  The main surround speakers in a 5.1 system should be connected to the surround terminals even if you have them placed behind you.  Confusing, I know...

Hi Chris... I tried connecting the back speakers to the surround terminals but gives me the same error and does not detect the SBL speaker. I dont think the speaker itself has an issuer as the voice out of that is ok, and I have tried swapping the L-R speakers with the same error too. Could you help me with this pls? Thanks!

Do you have a 5.1 or a 7.1 system?  It sounds like you have a 5.1 system, but the receiver is configured for 7.1.  So, you have correctly connected the surround speakers to the surround terminals, but now it is looking for speakers on the Back Surround terminals that would only be there in a 7.1 system.  You have to go into the menu to set Back Surround = None so that it stops looking for them.

Thank you very much for the prompt reply! Yes, have a 5.1 will go see how the Onkyo is configured... though its odd that Audyssey recognized SBR but gives an error only on SBL.

funny thing is I had the exact same problem. Difference is I tried the SBL all by itself and disconnected the SBR and it would detect and test it, hook them both up and SBL fails every time.

also, according to the manual I read that in order to take advantage of the Dolby i need to have them connected to the SBR, not the Surround. Initially I did have them connected to the surround posts, but I also noted that during testing with a DVD audio was great except dialogue was so low as to be inaudible. This was resolved when I moved the surround speakers in my 5.1 set to the SBR and SBL posts.
